Icon of Our Lady of Fatima

Icon of Our Lady of Fatima

The Icon of Our Lady of Fatima - Mother of God "By Thee, Unity" was painted in St. Petersburg after many years of prayer. The creation of the work took about two years. A Catholic priest, who contacted Sister Lúcia of Fátima, and an Orthodox iconographer participated in its realization.

Sister Lúcia Saw the Icon

During the two years of the icon's creation, Sister Lúcia received several photographs at the Convent of Saint Teresa of Jesus in Coimbra, where she resided, which showed the evolution of the work. Its authors maintained contact through the Mother Prioress of the convent, who, after showing the photographs to Sister Lúcia, would later respond to them saying: "We liked it." This response allows us to affirm that Sister Lúcia saw the photographs and approved of the work that was being created in St. Petersburg.

Symbolism and Mission

Heart, Surrounded by Thorns

In the center of the icon, we can see a medallion with the word "heart" in Church Slavonic. The heart, surrounded by thorns, represents Mary's love for Humanity and simultaneously the pain caused by its lack of love for God.

The Mission of the Icon for the Separated Brethren

These inscriptions represent the holy and ecumenical work carried out by a Catholic priest and an Orthodox iconographer, whose objective was to create an image before which Catholics and Orthodox could pray.
